Introduction

My HealtheVet is VA's award-winning e-health website, which offers Veterans, active duty soldiers, their dependents and caregivers anywhere, anytime Internet access to VA health care information and services. Launched nationwide in 2003, My HealtheVet is a free, online Personal Health Record that empowers Veterans to become informed partners in their health care. With My HealtheVet, America's Veterans can access trusted, secure, and current health and benefits information as well as record and store important health and military history information at their convenience. In addition, Veterans who receive their health care at a VA facility receive additional features, like online refill of VA medications anytime, anywhere - as long as there is access to the Internet!

A Prescription Refill is the number one electronic service that Veterans request. This My HealtheVet service is available from anywhere using the Internet, and offers a very easy way to refill your VA prescriptions. Type http://www.myhealth.va.gov into your browser to display the My HealtheVet Home page, similar to that shown below:

Rx Refill Requirements

NOTE: The Rx Refill function of My HealtheVet requires that you must:

  • Be a VA patient.
  • Have a prescription written by a VA doctor that has previously been filled at a VA pharmacy.
  • Have a My HealtheVet account - Registration is quick and easy.
    • When registering, enter your First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth, Gender and Social Security Number so they are an exact match to your VA electronic record. It is absolutely essential that these fields match the information exactly as it appears in your VA electronic record (use the Veterans Identification Card (VIC) to verify that your information is as it appears in the VA record). Additionally, the label of a VA prescription bottle will show your first and last name as it appears in your VA record.
    • Select the "VA Patient" checkbox (see red box below) in the Relationship to the VA section. This is a required step to refill your VA prescriptions with Rx Refill.
  • Existing Users: Make sure you selected the "VA Patient" checkbox when you registered. After logging into your personal account click on the PERSONAL INFORMATION tab, and then click on the Profiles tab. Under Relationship to the VA make sure the "VA Patient" checkbox is selected (see red box below); if not, click on the box to put a checkmark and then click the Save button at the bottom of the screen. Remember - this is a required step to refill your VA prescriptions with Rx Refill.
Relationship to the VA Checkboxes

Your First Name, Last Name, Social Security Number, Gender and Date of Birth must be in conformance with your VA record to ensure that you can refill your VA prescriptions with Rx Refill.
IMPORTANT: Please note that any information entered in your My HealtheVet account is for you only and is not shared with your VA facility. If you need to update the information in your official VA record, including the mailing address for your VA prescriptions, please contact the appropriate office at your local VA facility.

Refilling a Prescription - General Information

NOTES:

  • An Active prescription that is refillable is indicated by a checkbox. Not all Active prescriptions can be refilled. For example, when not enough time has passed since the last refill, a prescription may be Active, but not yet refillable.
  • Use the Prescription Number on the label of your medicine bottle to ensure you are refilling the proper prescription. (TIP: You can complete a new process called In-Person Authentication or IPA which will allow you to see the Prescription Name for ease of refilling. To learn more about In-Person Authentication (IPA) click here.)
  • When you have a current VA prescription that is not listed in your Refill Prescription Information dialog, please contact the VA pharmacy where your prescription was written.
  • Most of your prescriptions can be refilled online, with the exception of controlled narcotics (also called Schedule 2 medications), which cannot be refilled online.

In-Person Authenticated (IPA) Users and Rx Refill

Benefits of In-Person Authentication (IPA)

My HealtheVet has created an identity verification process called In-Person Authentication or IPA for short. This process is used to verify a My HealtheVet user's identity and allows access to copies of key portions of VA medical records. Registered My HealtheVet users who are VA patients that have completed the IPA process will be able to view the name of their VA prescription, as well as have access to Medications + Supplements.

Before In-Person Authentication can occur, several requirements must be met:

  • The user must be registered as a "VA Patient" in their My HealtheVet account
  • The user must view the My HealtheVet Orientation Video (available online or at local VA facility)
  • The user must read and sign the VA Form, 10-5345a-MHV (available online or at local VA facility)
  • The user must present a form of government issued photo identification to a qualified VA staff member at their VA facility to be physically proofed (Veterans Identification Card (VIC) or driver's license acceptable)

In-Person Authentication (IPA) and Rx Refill

My HealtheVet users who have completed the IPA process will be able to view their VA prescription name in addition to the prescription number.

When you select Refill Prescriptions or Refill My Prescriptions you will receive a list of active VA prescriptions that are displayed with both prescription number and name (see graphic below).

In-Person Authentication (IPA) and Rx Refill

Continue to refill prescription as described previously in this document.

In-Person Authentication (IPA) and Medications + Supplements

My HealtheVet users who have completed the IPA process will be able to view their VA prescription names and a new section called Medications + Supplements.

Medications + Supplements is a blended view of all medications, prescriptions and supplements that you entered in the Meds, OTC, Herbals, & Supplements journal as well as VA prescriptions in your medical record at any VA Medical Center (Refill Prescriptions and Prescriptions History).

Select the PHARMACY tab and then the MEDICATIONS + SUPPLEMENTS tab. You will receive a list of all self-entered medications and supplements as well as all VA medications in one chart (see graphic below).

Medications and Supplements Summary

You have the ability to select any item to view the details for that item. You will NOT be able to make any changes to medication information that comes from your VA Medical Record (indicated by VA under Source column).

You also have the option to filter this table. Under Filter Results at the top of the page, you can filter by Source, Status, or Category. Select the radio button and/or checkbox next to the filter options you wish to filter by and click the Go button. A new blended view table will appear with your filter options displayed.
