Coping Skills - Eat Wisely this Labor Day

Sometimes we eat because the clock tells us too, but other times we eat because everyone else is eating. At this year's Labor Day picnic, only eat until you are satisfied or full, don't overdo it! Here are some tips on managing your hunger when faced with temptation. You can also use the hunger scales (PDF) to determine how hungry you are.

If you feel tempted, tell yourself stop! (either aloud or silently); take five slow, deep breaths and relax; list three bad things that are likely to happen if you give in to your impulse, and quickly think of something else to do. If you are at your Annual Labor Day Picnic, find a new person to chat up or ask the Chef about the recipe.

If you aren't celebrating a holiday or surrounded by many people, you may eat because you are bored. Deal with your boredom (PDF) by getting active and occupying your mind with something other than food. There are lots of things you can do to control your urges to overeat (PDF). Try putting something in your mouth like gum, mint, toothpick, straw, cinnamon stick, etc.
