What is Authentication?
Authentication is a process used to confirm your identity before allowing access to portions of your VA health records and Department of Defense (DoD) service records. This is done to protect your personal information. You must complete the authentication process to get an upgraded My HealtheVet account. An upgraded account is also called an authenticated account. To view information from your VA health record or DoD military service information, you need to have an Advanced or Premium My HealtheVet Account. Before you can upgrade your account, you first need to be registered in My HealtheVet as a Veteran/VA Patient. If you do not have an account, please take this time to register.
After you have registered on My HealtheVet, there are three ways to upgrade your current My HealtheVet account:
In-Person Authentication, Online and/or Manual (by mail):
In-Person Authentication: Is done at your local VA health care facility. This is for Veterans receiving care at a VA health care facility.
Online Authentication: Done by completing and signing your VA Release of Information Form (10-5345a-MHV) online.
Manual (by mail): Done by sending your completed and signed paper VA Release of Information Form (10-5345a-MHV) by mail. This is for Veterans enrolled as patients at a VA health care facility.
Note: To upgrade your My HealtheVet account Online or through the Manual (by mail) method, you need to be logged into your non-My HealtheVet Account. For example, this could be through AccessVA or eBenefits, using your third party User ID and password (e.g., DS Logon). With a Premium account, you may use a single sign on process to access your My HealtheVet account through the AccessVA or eBenefits websites.
What will an Upgraded (Premium) My HealtheVet account allow me to do?
Your Upgraded (Premium) My HealtheVet account will give you access to key portions of your official VA health record and allow you to:
View VA Chemistry/Hematology Lab results
Receive information on your VA Appointments,
View VA Allergy and Adverse Reactions
Receive VA Wellness Reminders
View VA Medication History
View VA Prescriptions
View My Goals
Use the VA Blue Button to view additional parts of your VA health record, as they become available
Use Secure Messaging to communicate with your VA health care team
View DoD Military Service Information (for some Veterans)
Can anyone get an Upgraded (Premium) account in My HealtheVet?
No. Before you can get an Upgraded (Premium) My HealtheVet account (through In-Person or Online Authentication), you will need to be:

What is In-Person Authentication (IPA)?
You can upgrade your current My HealtheVet account to Premium status at your local VA health care facility. This is a quick, one-time, face-to-face authentication process. It can be done at your local VA health care facility or outpatient clinic. You can do this the next time you have a clinic visit. If you have any questions, please contact the My HealtheVet Coordinator at your local VA health care facility.
How do I get In-Person Authenticated (IPA)?
This process lets you upgrade your current My HealtheVet account to Premium status. To complete the In-Person Authentication process, you will need to:
Print, read, complete, and sign a paper copy of VA Release of Information Form (10-5345a-MHV). You can also get a copy of a blank 10-5345a-MHV form at the VA health facility during your visit.
Take a copy of your signed paper form to your local VA health facility. You also need to take a government issued photo ID (for example, your Veterans Identification Card or valid driver's license). Go to a qualified VA staff member. If you are not sure where to go, ask a member of your VA health care team.
After the VA staff verifies your information, your My HealtheVet account can be upgraded. When your account has been upgraded to Premium, your status will change on your My HealtheVet Member Logout box to Premium.
What is Online Authentication?
This is an online process that lets you upgrade your Advanced My HealtheVet account to Premium. It is for Veterans who have connected their Access VA and eBenefits Premium DS Logon accounts and their My HealtheVet VA patient accounts. Upgrading online is done through AccessVA or eBenefits websites with your non-My HealtheVet User ID and password(e.g., Premium DS Logon credentials).
How do I authenticate my account Online?
After you have connected your accounts you will be asked if you would like to start to upgrade to a Premium My HealtheVet account. To begin:
On the Start Upgrading Your My HealtheVet Account Today page, select the radio button: Upgrade to Premium Account
You will be taken to the online Upgrade Account to Premium - Instructions page
Print the Online Instruction page by selecting the Printer-Friendly link at the top of the online Instruction page.
Select Continue at the bottom of the online Instruction page.
The process to Upgrade Your Account Online will begin. This takes you off My HealtheVet to the AccessVA website.
When your My HealtheVet account has been upgraded to Premium, your account status will change on your Member Logout box to Premium.
If you choose not to upgrade your account using the Online process:
You will have the opportunity to upgrade the next time you log in to either AccessVA or eBenefits using your Premium DS Logon User ID and Password.
Or, the next time you visit your local VA health care facility, you can upgrade your account through In-Person Authentication.
Can I make changes to my My HealtheVet Profile page after my account is upgraded?
Once your account is upgraded, your name, Social Security Number, date of birth and gender are locked down. To make changes, you will need to contact your local VA facility to update your official VA record. Once your information is updated in the official VA record, your My HealtheVet profile page will be automatically updated.
You can update other information on your My HealtheVet profile page such as your address or phone number. However, those changes are NOT sent to your official VA health record.
If I have questions about upgrading my account, who should I contact?
If you have any questions, please contact the My HealtheVet Coordinator at your local VA facility or send an inquiry through Contact MHV.
If I get an Upgraded (Premium) account, will others be able to see my information?
No. Information in your My HealtheVet account cannot be seen by anyone but you. This includes information in your personal profile. Neither your VA health care team, nor anyone else, has access to this information unless you share it. This is why you should let your VA facility know if you change any information in your profile, like your address or phone number, so they can update your VA health record.
Is my information secure?
Yes. My HealtheVet is a secure website. The VA follows strict security policies and practices to make sure that your personal health information is safe and protected. Remember that you also have a responsibility to keep your health information safe by not sharing your password, or leaving printed material where someone else can see it.
What is DEERS?
DEERS stands for Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System. It is a worldwide, computerized record of uniformed Servicemembers (sponsors), their family members, and others who are eligible for military benefits. Enrollment in DEERS is automatic for all Servicemembers and Veterans who have served since 1982. Those who served prior to 1982 are being added from VA/DoD records.
